THE BUILDING ISN'T FAILING.
IT'S DEFENDING ITSELF.
THE PREMISE
Municipal structural inspector Evan Rourke races to stop the demolition of an Atlanta rail annex after discovering a vibration-sensitive organism woven through the structure that actively reroutes loads to preserve its shelter. With forensic engineer Sami Ortega, he must isolate the building into mechanical islands before automated failure logic and demolition activity provoke a catastrophe.
Not a conventional monster: the organism uses rigid mechanical continuity—steel, conduit, pipe, cable tray, shelving and other connected objects—as a distributed sensory and load-bearing network.
Every invasive response can make the next failure worse. The more aggressively people attack the problem, the more dangerous the structure can become.
Technical problem-solving drives the tension. The characters must verify cause, sever accidental bridges and contain the threat without turning the response into the disaster.
